Letter-Writing Drive Urged for Road Funds
Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich and Antelope Valley leaders Wednesday urged a public letter-writing campaign to persuade state officials to approve about $132 million to widen the Antelope Valley Freeway and California 138.
Antonovich, Lancaster Mayor Henry Hearns, Palmdale Mayor William (Pete) Knight and others said they want the California Transportation Commission next year, as part of a state highways plan, to allocate $82 million for the Antelope Valley Freeway and $50 million for California 138.
“We have a valley here that’s a gold mine. But there’s no way to get to the gold. It’s a bottleneck,” said Dan Jackson, executive director of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, at a news conference Antonovich held in the Quartz Hill area.
With the funding, the Antelope Valley Freeway would get an extra lane in both directions, probably reserved for car pools, between the Santa Clarita area and Palmdale. And Caltrans would widen 138 to four lanes from two between Palmdale and the vicinity of the San Bernardino County line.
