Report Opposes Naming Center for Lindsay

Share

A city report released Wednesday says the Convention Center should not be renamed after late Councilman Gilbert Lindsay because of the “potential for confusion” it would cause as city officials try to market the facility nationwide.

Prepared by the city administrative office, the report suggests that, instead, a plaza under construction near the Convention Center be named in memory of Lindsay. Earlier this year, Councilmen Nate Holden and John Ferraro proposed renaming the center in memory of Lindsay, who served as the representative of the 9th District for 27 years until his death in December at age 90.

The Convention Center is undergoing a $372-million expansion and city officials have begun refocusing its marketing efforts away from booking local trade and consumer shows to attracting national conventioneers.
