Share

It might be only the first week of American Legion District 20 play, but Van Nuys-Notre Dame pitcher Eric Vellozzi already has proved to be his team’s salvation.

Vellozzi picked up his second save in three games as Van Nuys hung on to defeat Sun Valley, 3-2, at Poly High on Wednesday.

Van Nuys led, 3-0, entering the bottom of the seventh. With none out, one run in and runners at first and third, Vellozzi relieved starter Cary Wichmann and threw a double-play ball as the second run scored. Vellozzi recorded the final out on a ground ball. Edgar Maldonado and Ryan Stromsborg each had three hits for Van Nuys (2-1). Marlon McKinney had four hits for Sun Valley.
