At 38, Connors Is Still Kicking; He Will Play Chang in Third Round
What’s gotten into Jimmy Connors?
At 38, eight years since his last Grand Slam victory, Connors reached the third round of the French Open Wednesday by defeating Ronald Agenor, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 0-6, 6-4.
In only his 10th match of 1991 and 13th in two years, Connors came from 1-3 down in the fifth set to gain a third-round date with Michael Chang, 19 years his junior.
The only drawback to Connors’ victory was that it was not shown on French television, which cut away just before the final game in order to show the European Championship soccer game between Marseilles and Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
“I understand soccer is very important to the French,” Connors said as he smiled. “I’m just glad the fans stayed around in the stands to see me.”
Connors is ranked No. 324, Agenor, from Haiti, is No. 28.
