A Bay Park church was struck by arson early Thursday, less than 48 hours after a suspicious blaze heavily damaged a church a few blocks away, the San Diego Fire Department said.

Seventeen firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze that began about 5:36 a.m. Thursday in a back room of Pioneer Unity Church of Christ at 2550 Fairfield St., said John Hale, chief of the Metro Arson Strike Team. No one was injured, and damage was estimated at $15,000, he said.

The Pioneer Church blaze follows an arson fire that caused more than $400,000 damage to St. David’s Episcopal Church on nearby Milton Street.

Hale said the Metro Arson Strike Team is investigating both fires, but will not comment yet on the specific causes of the blazes. No suspects are in custody. Anyone with information is asked to call the Metro Arson Strike Team at 236-6815.
