The collegiate careers of Kevin Hendrix and Tyrone Jeffries of Cal State Northridge came to a close Friday in the NCAA Division I track and field championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Hendrix, a senior from Fresno Roosevelt High, and Jeffries, a senior from Pasadena Muir, were eliminated in the semifinals of the men’s 100 meters and the 110-meter high hurdles, respectively.

Hendrix, the 1990 Division II champion in the 100, ran a wind-aided 10.39 seconds to finish fifth in the first semifinal of that event.

James Trapp of Clemson ran 10.04 and placed first.

The top three finishers in each of the two semifinals and the next two fastest finishers advanced to today’s final.

Salaam Gariba of Villanova, who ran 10.29 and finished fifth in the second semifinal, was the slowest qualifier to advance.

Jeffries, the slowest qualifier (14.11) to advance from the first-round heats of the high hurdles Thursday, finished sixth in the first semifinal Friday, running a wind-aided 13.91.

Jeffries’ time was the fastest of his career under any conditions (wind-aided or legal), but it left him well behind winner Jerry Roney of James Madison, who timed 13.59.

Stephen Golding of Nebraska was the slowest qualifier for today’s final, running 13.78 to place fourth in the same semifinal.

With Hendrix and Jeffries eliminated, senior Darcy Arreola is the lone Northridge athlete remaining in the meet.

Arreola, who finished third in the 1,500 meters in the 1989 Division I meet, will run in the final of that event today.

Although her time of 4 minutes 19.19 seconds was the fastest in Thursday’s qualifying heats, Arreola will enter today’s final as an underdog to Jennifer Lanctot of Boston University, Maria Akraka of Sweden and UC Irvine, and Jasmin Jones of Tennessee.

Jones finished second in the 800 final Friday, clocking 2:03.35.
