Kaye Ballard’s ‘Hey, Ma’

Producer Jan Foster’s May 27 Counterpunch about Times critic Don Shirley--in which he said Shirley’s unfavorable review curtailed the run of Kaye Ballard’s “Hey, Ma--Working Hollywood Blvd. at Last!”--is insulting to Hollywood and to Los Angeles theatergoers.

As a Hollywood resident, I am keenly interested in seeing the community’s rebirth with quality theater replacing X-rated movies and upscale shops replacing hawkers of T-shirts, trinkets and tattoos.

But the way back is not through privileged treatment. Hollywood theater needs no affirmative-action plan. Give theatergoers top productions for their top dollar, Mr. Producer, and they will turn out.
