City Council Postpones Farmers Market Decision

Share

A City Council committee Monday postponed a decision on whether to declare Farmers Market and its environs in the Fairfax district a historical monument, hoping to reach a compromise between builders interested in developing the area and preservationists.

The council recently approved plans for developers to build 700,000 square feet of shops, restaurants, departments stores and housing for senior citizens near the open-air market. Residents and preservationists, fearing that the charm of the 57-year-old market will be destroyed by the development, are seeking to have it designated as historical.

Farmers Market, built in 1934 as a place for local farmers to sell their produce, has evolved into a gathering place for seniors and a tourist destination that attracts 6 million visitors a year.
