NCAA GOLF : Four Tied at 1-Under 71; USC Is Fifth

Dean Wilson and Jeff Kraemer of Brigham Young University each shot a one-under 71 to share the first-round lead Wednesday at the NCAA men’s golf championships.

Wilson, a junior from Kaaneohe, Hawaii, and Kraemer, a junior from Canada, helped their team to the opening-round lead with a five-man score of 295 on the Poppy Hills Golf Course.

The two BYU players share the lead with Northwestern’s Bill McGowan and Georgia Southern’s Bo Fennell. Ten players are tied for fifth at even-par 72 on the 6,865-yard layout.

Two-time defending champion Phil Mickelson, of Arizona State, tied for 21st with a 74. Mickelson is seeking to join Ben Crenshaw, who played for Texas, as three-time NCAA titlists.

In the team competition, BYU holds a one-shot lead over Northwestern. Wake Forest and North Carolina are tied for third at 298. USC is fifth in the 30-team field at 299. Arizona State, the 1990 team champion, had a 309 total and is tied for 19th place.
