Mark Langston had some swelling in his right ankle Wednesday but expects to start against the Boston Red Sox tonight as scheduled.

Langston sprained his ankle Tuesday, while running in the outfield during batting practice. Precautionary X-rays taken Tuesday were negative, and he received treatment on his ankle Wednesday instead of participating in pregame drills.

“It’s definitely a lot better today. The more I walk around, the better I feel,” Langston said. “I don’t anticipate any problem pitching.”

Second base has evolved into a platoon situation. Luis Sojo, who started against left-hander Tom Bolton Tuesday, sat against right-hander Mike Gardiner Wednesday and Donnie Hill played second. Sojo has started five of the past 10 games. . . . Floyd Bannister (strained left shoulder) will pitch a simulated game Friday. He remains on the disabled list. Center fielder Junior Felix, put on the disable list Tuesday because of a strained right calf muscle, is getting daily treatments. . . . Jimmie Reese, the Angels’ 86-year-old conditioning coach and fungo-hitting master, hopes to be back in uniform soon. Reese has been idled by phlebitis and cataract surgery since spring training.
