Spending Priorities

Share

Is the military supposed to serve as some type of glorified unemployment agency? I ask this question in response to the comments made by Congressmen Duncan Hunter and Randy Cunningham and their efforts to prevent certain military bases in San Diego from being closed (“Officials to Fight Idea of Closing Military Sites,” June 1).

If the government has decided that these bases are not necessary, do we need to keep them open just to protect jobs? I do not think that is the purpose of the military.

These Republican congressmen reject any mention of tax increases, yet they want the taxpayer and government to go on supporting military bases that are deemed unnecessary. The result, of course, is a skyrocketing federal budget deficit.

How nice it would be if these same congressmen reacted so strongly and forcefully when the government threatens to cut spending for education, health care or social services.
