NEWBURY PARK : Council OKs Funds for Road Extension

Opponents of a plan to extend Lynn Road in Newbury Park have lost their battle to stop the project.

The Thousand Oaks City Council voted 4 to 1 last week to speed a $700,000 extension of Lynn Road west of Reino Road. Councilwoman Elois Zeanah was the lone opponent.

Lynn Road opponents said the extension would increase commuter traffic and endanger motorists and schoolchildren who use it.

The road project was not supposed to begin until builders of the 2,350-unit Dos Vientos development began housing construction. But an economic downturn has forced developers to delay work. In April, instead of waiting for the economy to improve, Thousand Oaks city officials decided to advance the developers $700,000 out of a Newbury Park road fund.

But the project has pitted residents of Lynn and Potrero roads against each other. They fear that their roads will become unsafe.

“Lynn Road will become a prime racetrack for local hot rods,” Jocelyn DeVault told the council Tuesday.

Under the road plan, Potrero Road will stop in a cul-de-sac near Pinehill Street. Motorists will be forced to take Lynn Road until it reconnects further west with Potrero, said city public works director John Clement.
