Led by the goalkeeping of Tony Meola, the United States played Juventus of Italy to a scoreless tie on Sunday at New Haven, Conn.

Meola made eight saves as the national team’s record moved to 3-1-3 in the World Series of Soccer.

Both teams had good chances to score in the first half, but Juventus controlled most of the second half.

The United States missed its best opportunity of the game with two minutes left in the first half, as Bruce Murray put a shot over the far corner. The United States managed only three shots in the second half.

A crowd of 33,457 attended the game at Yale Bowl, which is bidding to be one of the host sites for the World Cup games in 1994.
