Commissioner Fay Vincent, in California to attend owners’ meetings this week, said he was pleased to see attendance figures for the Angels’ weekend series against the Detroit Tigers. The three games drew 152,156 fans, including 49,977 Friday for Fernando Valenzuela’s Angel debut.

“Those things are great, people coming back from adversity or injuries,” Vincent said. “If Bo Jackson comes back, that would be a terrific story, too.”

Vincent said he’s awaiting the fate of a bill in the Arizona legislature that would provide funding for improvements to Cactus League stadiums. That bill affects the Angels, whose move to Tempe depends partly on improvements on Tempe Diablo Stadium. The Seattle Mariners are leaving Tempe but haven’t found a new home.

“We’re hoping Seattle stays in Arizona,” Vincent said. “If Seattle leaves, that would be a big blow.” However, expansion might provide an addition to the league. “Denver would be an obvious candidate for the Cactus League,” Vincent said.

Pitcher Tyrone Hill of Yucaipa High School, who signed with the Brewers after being chosen 15th overall in last week’s draft, worked out with the club before Monday’s game.
