Explosion Kills Baby in Home

A 1-year-old girl seated at the dinner table in a South Los Angeles home died in an explosion that resulted when gasoline used by her father to clean the floor ignited.
The child, Sylvia Esparza, was killed instantly, Los Angeles Fire Department Battalion Chief Dennis Willahan said.
Augustine Esparza, about 35, was cleaning the kitchen floor while the child’s mother, Matilda, 30, prepared dinner on a gas stove, Willahan said. The stove flame, grease, or the pilot light on the water heater set off the explosion, he said.
