The San Diego County medical examiner’s office said Tuesday that it was a U.S. Border Patrol van that struck and killed a pedestrian near the U.S.-Mexico border late Sunday.

Ted A. Swofford, designated Border Patrol spokesman, said late Tuesday that he was off duty this week and unaware of the incident. Other Border Patrol officials were not immediately available for comment.

However, a report on the incident written by William Leard, investigator with the medical examiner’s office, said it was a Border Patrol van that struck the victim at 8:30 p.m.

The victim was hit at the commercial truck exit off Interstate 5, just north of the border and just south of the Camino de la Plaza exit.

The victim was identified as Jose Carlos Martinez Carrillo, 20, of Lamont, Calif. His citizenship was unknown.

The victim was walking west on the off-ramp when he was struck. Paramedics and Life Flight helicopter were summoned, but he was pronounced dead at 8:51 p.m. at the scene with multiple injuries, a coroner’s official said.

He was struck in an area where, in recent years, scores of immigrants have been hit and killed by vehicles, mostly after they crossed the border.
