SAN CLEMENTE : City Joins Waste Reduction Program

Share

As part of ongoing efforts to coordinate trash disposal and recycling in South County, San Clemente recently became the last of four area cities to join in a cooperative waste disposal agreement.

Dana Point, Laguna Niguel and San Juan Capistrano officials all signed the agreement last month. The document is a memorandum of understanding stating that the four cities are committed to developing common goals and a single plan to reduce waste sent to local landfills, said Michael Morgan, solid waste coordinator for San Clemente.

State law requires that solid waste sent to landfills must be reduced 25% by 1995, and 50% by the year 2000.

Three of the four cities--San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano--have worked together on a pilot curbside recycling program in the past year. Laguna Niguel joined the group for future waste-reduction plans, Morgan said.

The four cities also are sharing costs to hire consultants specializing in waste reduction, Morgan said.
