Groundbreaking for the latest segment of Metro Rail is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the northeast corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue.
The western extension of the subway’s Red Line is scheduled to go into service in 1996. It will provide service to the downtown area, linking up with a line that is to run north on Vermont Avenue into Hollywood and eventually into the San Fernando Valley.
The ceremony is to include speeches by politicians and bureaucrats and an appearance by Korean folk performers.
