Downtown trolley service came to a halt for two hours Friday afternoon when a construction crew dropped a palm tree on the trolley system’s aerial power line, officials said.

Service for the Centre City line--along C Street and to the Convention Center--was disrupted about 1 p.m. until shortly after 3 p.m., according to Langley C. Powell, president of San Diego Trolley Inc. Six San Diego Transit buses transported stranded trolley riders in lieu of the trolleys, which run every 15 minutes, he said.

The power outage occurred when a construction worker at the C Street Urban Design project at India and C streets accidentally dropped a large palm on the trolley system’s overhead power wire, pulling it to the ground, Powell said. The palm trees are part of a plan to beautify the streets, he said. No one was injured, Powell said.
