Drought-Wary Residents Show Stream of Water-Consciousness

Golden Springs Drive comes by its name honestly, it seems.

A natural spring--not some water-wasting resident--is responsible for recently discovered water flowing across the road, Walnut Valley Water District officials said last week.

The district was alerted to the shallow stream by drought-conscious residents of the city, where water rationing is mandatory.

But district officials, after testing water mains, monitoring water meters and chemically analyzing the water in the road, say they have concluded that there is a real spring near Golden Springs Drive, near the Pomona Freeway. The appearance of the water may have something to do with recent construction nearby, officials said.

“We’ve gotten lots of calls from people thinking that someone was just wasting water, but it turns out it’s just ground water,” said Cregg Zimmerman, district director of operations.

If water costs continue to rise, water officials hope to capture water from the spring and use it as part of a recycled water system for irrigating nearby Peterson Park.
