Stefan Edberg tuned up for his defense of the Wimbledon title by winning the $500,000 Queens Club grass-court tournament at London for the first time, beating American David Wheaton, 6-2, 6-3, in Sunday’s rain-delayed final.

Edberg, ranked No. 1 in the world, did not lose a set in five matches.

“This is the best I’ve ever played in the run up to Wimbledon,” he said.

Wimbledon begins next Monday.

At Birmingham, England, top-seeded Martina Navratilova defeated fourth-seeded Natalia Zvereva, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), to win the $150,000 Edgbaston women’s grass-court tournament. Navratilova claimed the $27,000 first prize with her 155th tournament title.

The victory, which she accomplished without losing a set all week, took her within two of Chris Evert’s record of 157 tournament championships.

Both women had to play semifinal matches earlier in the day because of rain Saturday. Navratilova won hers, 6-3, 6-2, over Brenda Schultz of the Netherlands, and Zvereva upset second-seeded Zina Garrison, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 8-6.

At Florence, Italy, unseeded Thomas Muster defeated Davis Cup teammate Horst Skoff, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2, in an all-Austrian final of an ATP tournament.

Christian Saceanu of Germany saved two match points to beat Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, and win a grass-court tournament at Rosmalen, Netherlands.
