De los Reyes Nomination to Police Panel Advances

The nomination of Anthony de los Reyes--the mayor’s choice for the fifth and final vacant seat on the beleaguered Los Angeles Police Commission--was approved Monday by the City Council’s Public Safety Committee and forwarded to the full council for confirmation.

Councilman Richard Alatorre, chairman of the three-member committee, questioned De los Reyes briefly before the panel voted unanimously for approval. If De los Reyes is confirmed, it will mark the first time in six months that the commission is operating at full strength.

De los Reyes pledged to “begin the process of healing” and to help restore the credibility of both the Los Angeles Police Department and the five-member Police Commission, which he said has been tarnished in the eyes of the City Council. The commission has been at odds with the council since its unsuccessful attempt to place Police Chief Daryl F. Gates on involuntary leave.

A Los Angeles trial lawyer, De los Reyes, 48, has served for more than eight years on the city’s Civil Service Commission.
