The 1994 World Cup will begin on June 17, and the final will be on July 17, the third-latest ever, the organizing committee for soccer’s world championships said. World Cup USA 1994 announced the schedule three years before the 24-team tournament is due to begin.

Only two World Cup finals have been played later. The 1930 World Cup in Uruguay--soccer’s first championship--and the 1966 World Cup in England both ended July 30.

The 52-game tournament will be conducted in eight to 12 U.S. cities. The Coliseum and the Rose Bowl are considered to be among the favorites for the final.

No more soccer matches will be played at Brussel’s Heysel Stadium, where 39 people died during riots in 1985, after violent incidents during the Belgian Cup final last weekend.
