Firefighters found the charred remains of an elderly woman as they battled a blaze inside a Poway condominium, the Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.

The identity of the woman was not known by late in the day, the county medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy will be performed. Units from the Poway and San Diego fire departments responded to the 10:42 p.m. Tuesday fire that broke out in the condominium in the 13000 block of Birch Tree Lane, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said. The cause of the fire is under investigation, she said.

Damage to the single-story structure was $75,000, the spokeswoman said. Loss to contents was estimated at $25,000.
