HUNTINGTON BEACH : Art Center Receives a $40,000 Donation

City officials say a $40,000 donation made this week has pushed a fund-raising drive for the Art Center past the halfway mark.

With the donation from the American Express Co., the Huntington Beach Art Center Foundation now has $375,000 in pledges. The goal is $700,000.

“We feel confident now that all of the money can be raised by October of this year and that the Art Center will be able to open, as scheduled, in the fall of 1992,” said Michael Mudd, the city’s cultural affairs manager.

The Art Center is to be housed in an 11,000-square-foot former commercial building in downtown Huntington Beach. The vacant structure was purchased three years ago by the city for $365,000 and donated to the Huntington Beach Art Center Foundation.

The foundation, in turn, pledged to raise the $700,000 necessary for renovating the structure and preparing it for public art displays and classes.
