Fairfax : Forum on May Co. Building

Share

Hoping to win public support for its campaign to preserve the May Co. building at the corner of Fairfax Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard, the Los Angeles Conservancy is sponsoring a community forum Tuesday.

The 6:30 p.m. meeting at the Westside Jewish Community Center will include a lecture by an architectural historian and comments from community members, organizers said.

The building’s status is uncertain because May Co., which owns it, plans to move its store into the regional shopping mall recently approved for construction on the Farmers Market site at the corner of Fairfax Avenue and 3rd Street. Eventually, May Co. intends to develop the Fairfax-Wilshire site as a hotel and office complex.

The building was erected in 1939 and expanded in 1946. It is notable for the tall gold cylinder that decorates its southwest corner and is regarded as an excellent example of the Streamline Moderne style of architecture.
