Water-Saving Strategy Adopted
The Lomita City Council approved a mandatory water-rationing plan Monday that penalizes residents and businesses that fail to trim their water use by 20%.
The measure, the third phase of the city’s water conservation plan, will take effect within 30 days.
Under the plan, residents will be charged $3 for water use that exceeds an 80% target figure based on an average of their water usage from April 1, 1989, to March 31, 1990. Penalties will be higher if a resident’s usage exceeds the average, and the city may install flow restrictors at residences if it determines excess use is a problem.
The council adopted the measure in an effort to comply with Metropolitan Water District regulations, which became effective in March and imposes severe surcharges on the city for failing to cut its water use by 20%. The MWD is the city’s main supplier of water.
