COSTA MESA — A transient was arrested early Thursday in connection with an attack on a 76-year-old man who was out walking his dog, police said.
The victim, Henry Fredriksen, was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, police said. He was later transferred to FHP Medical Center in Fountain Valley, where he was listed in serious condition.
Officer Wayne Riedmann said Fredriksen was walking his dog in the 1000 block of Victoria Street about 1 a.m. when a man struck him in the face, then seized his flashlight.
“The suspect then hit the victim with the flashlight,” Riedmann said.
Shortly after, officers arrested Jack Allan Gregerson, 24, a transient who had apparently been sleeping in a nearby schoolyard, Riedmann said.
He was held on suspicion of assault and theft, Riedmann said.
