El Monte : Water Rate Hike Proposed

Share

The city’s public works director is proposing sharp increases of 17% or more in customers’ water rates.

If the City Council approves a 17% hike after a public hearing scheduled for July 23, the average water bill would go from $19.13 a month to $22.38.

Robert J. Pinniger, city director of public works, said the increases are being sought to fund capital improvements in the water system, employee salaries and increased costs due to cleanup of the San Gabriel Valley’s contaminated water supply.

Also under consideration are two bids from private companies seeking to buy the city-owned El Monte Water Co.

The city has considered selling as a way to ease its budget difficulties, but now some members of the City Council say they would prefer to keep the company and turn it into a money-making venture.

The public hearing will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers.
