BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Carter Tied for Third on Games List

Share

Gary Carter started his fourth game in three days Sunday, giving him 49 games played this season and 1,927 for his career, tying him with Jim Sundberg for third place on the all-time catchers’ list.

At this pace he will play in 105 games this season, his most since 1988. On Friday, he started both games of a doubleheader for the first time since 1988.

Until Sunday night, Carter had planned to take a cortisone shot in his sore elbow to relieve pain he has felt since taking extra throwing practice a couple of weeks ago. Carter canceled the shot after wearing a protective sleeve seemed to help, but said he might still take it at the All-Star break.

“I’m tired, but the elbow feels better, so for now we’re just going to wait,” said Carter, 37, who has helped the Dodgers to a 14-5 record as a starter.

The Dodgers had hoped that Carter would split time with rookie Carlos Hernandez after Mike Scioscia suffered a bruised right hand. But after entering the first game of Friday’s doubleheader in the eighth inning, Hernandez threw a ball into center field for an error and has been on the bench since.
