A 16-year-old girl from National City, who was driving a car that was reported stolen, died when it overturned on Interstate 805, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Ava Johnson died at 4:25 p.m. Sunday when the car she was driving at more than 80 m.p.h. flipped over on I-805, just south of Interstate 8, Officer Larry Urban said.

The car, which was reported stolen in Southeast San Diego on Saturday morning, had veered into the center divider, Urban said.

Three passengers--two juveniles and a man, who were unharmed--reportedly fled the car. A witness followed the group as they left the freeway and caught a city bus, Urban said.

The witness called the police from his car phone and followed the bus until authorities stopped it a short while later, Urban said.

Loyl David Allen, 18, of San Diego was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and booked into County Jail downtown, Urban said. Bail has been set at $5,000, a jail spokeswoman said. The two juveniles were also arrested on suspicion of auto theft and are at Juvenile Hall, Urban said.
