BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Langston, Winfield May Be All-Stars

At least two Angels probably will be added to the All-Star team Thursday, when pitchers and reserves for the American League squad will be announced.

Leading candidates to represent the Angels on July 8 in Toronto are pitchers Mark Langston, Chuck Finley and Bryan Harvey, first baseman Wally Joyner and right fielder Dave Winfield.

Although Finley has ranked among the AL leaders in victories all season, his chances of being picked are slim because he’s scheduled to start Sunday at Texas and would be unable to pitch Tuesday. If he’s not selected, he won’t be upset.

“It doesn’t matter. Not really. I’ve made it two years,” said Finley, who pitched a scoreless inning last year at Wrigley Field and failed to appear in the 1989 game at Anaheim Stadium.

Joyner, whose .326 batting average before Tuesday’s game ranked among the AL leaders, also seemed indifferent. “I thought I was a lock for the All-Star Game in ’87 and I didn’t make it,” he said. “Whatever happens, I will greet with open arms. Three days off sounds pretty good right now.”

Winfield’s credentials--a .294 batting average, 17 homers and 55 RBIs before Tuesday--support his case. So do his teammates.

“I think he deserves it,” Joyner said.

Manager Doug Rader agreed: “I can’t imagine Dave Winfield not being on the All-Star team.”

Nor can Winfield. “The closer you get, the more you want it,” said Winfield, whose streak of 12 consecutive All-Star appearances was interrupted by his back surgery in 1989.

The Angels announced an extension of their contract with KTLA-Channel 5 for three years, through 1995.

Part of the new agreement includes options for KTLA to increase its number of telecasts from 50 to 60 per season. KTLA has aired Angel games since 1964.

Pitcher Scott Bailes was unavailable Tuesday because of a sprained right foot. His status is day-to-day. Dave Gallagher, who had missed three games because of a strained right calf, hit for Max Venable in the fifth inning Tuesday and stayed in the game in center field. Shortstop Dick Schofield--fine but for an 0-for-10 slump--was available. . . . Ruben Amaro, Lee Stevens and Chad Curtis of the Angels’ Triple-A Edmonton farm club were named to the Pacific Coast League all-star team. Manager Max Oliveras was added as a coach.
