The Laguna Art Museum has been awarded a $40,000 challenge grant from the California Arts Council, pending approval by the state of the council’s 1991-92 budget. The challenge grant, the only one the council has awarded this year in Orange County, will go toward “California Art of the Century,” described by a museum official as an extensive three-year-project involving exhibits, research and education.

Automobiles once owned by former Beatles Ringo Starr and John Lennon will be part of the 15th anniversary Rick Cole Newport Beach Collector Car Auction Saturday and Sunday at the Hyatt Newporter Hotel. Also up for bids will be a 1977 Porsche 930 once owned by rock star Rod Stewart, a 1976 turquoise-blue Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow that was a gift from Frank Sinatra to wife Barbara, and Muhammed Ali’s 1959 Mercedes-Benz.
