SPORTS BRIEFS : Boats on Way to Hawaii in Trans-Pacific Yacht Race

About 40 boats are more than halfway to Honolulu in the biennial 2,225-mile Trans-Pacific Yacht Race, which began last week off Point Fermin in San Pedro. Boats may arrive in Hawaii as early as Friday, according to officials at the Long Beach Yacht Club, an event sponsor.

Former Lakewood High quarterback Tom Tereschuk has resigned as football coach and athletic director at California High in Whittier to become the quarterback coach under Coach Ken Visser at Whittier College. Assistant Nick Buehler has been appointed to replace Tereschuk, who will continue to teach and coach baseball at the high school.

The California Seals (7-9) of the Los Angeles Basin Collegiate League split a pair of double-headers last weekend and remain in sixth place, four games behind the Woodland Hills Astros (10-4). The Seals begin play today in a National Baseball Congress qualifying tournament to be held at Cal State Long Beach and UC Irvine. Game times were not available at press time.

Pool play concludes Friday at the Slam-n-Jam Summer Grand Finale basketball tournament at Carson High. South Gate plays Hawthorne at 11 a.m. Friday. At 1:40 p.m. Jordan plays St. Bernard, and at 7 p.m. Battleground, Wash., meets Dominguez. Consolation and championship finals are slated Saturday. Information: (213) 532-0622.

The West defeated the East, 14-6, in the 24th prep 605 All-Star Football Game on Saturday at Cerritos College.
