Venice Art Walk Nets $525,000 for Clinic

Venice Family Clinic’s 12th annual Art Walk held June 1 and 2 netted $525,000. More than 5,000 supporters attended the fund-raiser. Proceeds will be used to fund the clinic’s free health care services for the poor and homeless. More than 300 artists and 500 volunteers participated. The gala dinner was chaired by Pamela Robinson Specktor and Patti Marcus.

* St. Joseph Medical Center’s Foundation held its annual installation and donor recognition dinner May 15 in the center’s auditorium. The foundation honored more than 50 individuals, businesses and foundations for cumulative gifts of $10,000 or more. Dr. Richard E. Horowitz was installed as chairman of the SJMC Foundation Board of Trustees.

* United Jewish Fund’s San Fernando Valley Region Women’s Division raised $216,000 at its Valley-wide “bruncheon” and fashion show. The event was held at the Universal Sheraton. Proceeds will be allocated to more than 20 non-sectarian humanitarian programs.

* Westside Food Bank’s “Spring Thanks Giving Dinner” held May 26 at the Beverly Hills Country Club, attended by almost 200 guests, netted more than $18,000. The event was underwritten by Daniel J. Travanti and an anonymous donor. Proceeds will be used to aid the elderly, the handicapped and low-income families.

* Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has received a $100,000 donation from Jean Schaffner in honor of her late husband, Franklin Schaffner. The gift is for the academy’s endowment campaign for the newly-opened Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills. Monies received through the endowment campaign are used to fund future operations of the center.

* American Heart Assn., Greater Los Angeles Affiliate received $110,000, net proceeds raised at the third annual Stroud’s Golf and Tennis Classic May 22 at the Industry Hills and Sheraton Resort. The event was hosted by Bill Stroud. Proceeds will go to cardiovascular research and education program.

* National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine in Denver will receive more than $110,000, proceeds from the June 18 Golf and Tennis Extravaganza at the Industry Hills and Sheraton Resort. The event was sponsored by American Isuzu Motors Inc., Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc., Chiat/Day/Mojo, Times Mirror Magazines, Newsweek, ESPN, Los Angeles Times, United Parcel Service, Tennis Magazine and JD Power & Assn. NJC specializes in chronic lung and immune system research, treatment and professional education.

* American Cancer Society’s “Hermanos el la Lucha Contra el Cancer Gala,” held May 7 at the Century Plaza Hotel, honored the Lozano family, founders and publishers of La Opinion. Net proceeds of $20,000 will be used for public awareness programs to reduce cancer risk and provide early detection education in Latino communities. A portion will also be used to support research.

* Santa Monica Playhouse held its Tribute ‘91, a trio of evenings dedicated to theater excellence and entertainment, and raised $13,000. The evening’s costs were underwritten by an anonymous donor.

* El Nido Services raised more than $40,000 at its “City of Angels” theater party June 4. El Nido, a nonprofit United Way organization founded in 1926, provides counseling and supportive services to children and parents. June Lang and Sharon Kaplan were co-chairs.

* Beverly Hills Hadassah has announced a $1-million contribution from the Mark Taper Foundation to assist BHH in the acquisition of new headquarters.
