Marymount Selects Shimizu as Soccer Coach

Mike Shimizu has been named the first men’s soccer coach at Marymount College, starting this fall.

Shimizu played soccer at Rolling Hills High and for Claremont-Mudd in college. He has been boys’ soccer coach at Rolling Hills the past three years, compiling a 37-26-11 record.

Marymount recently instituted a men’s soccer program after dropping basketball.

Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock continued to dominate the Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn. tour by defeating Elaine Roque and Janice Opalinski-Harrer, 15-4, at Oceanside last weekend.

Kirby and Rock of San Diego each won $4,800. Roque of Santa Barbara and Opalinski-Harrer of Honolulu each won $3,600.

The women compete in Myrtle Beach, S.C., this weekend and in Venice on July 13-14.

The South Bay Spoilers, a girls’ 12-and-younger volleyball team, placed second to a Hawaiian team at the U.S. Volleyball Assn. age-group nationals last week at UC Davis.

The Spoilers are coached by Pat and Sharkie Zartman of Hermosa Beach.

The Southern California Gunners, a boys’ 16-and-younger soccer team from Hawthorne, will be competing starting Sunday in the seventh annual USA Cup Soccer Tournament at Blaine, Minn.

The tournament, which runs through Saturday, includes 416 teams in various age groups from around the United States as well as Canada, Japan, Africa and Europe. The weeklong event combines the soccer games with cultural ceremonies, sightseeing and a visit to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

The tournament is sponsored by the National Sports Center.

Team registration will begin Monday for a men’s 40-and-older softball league sponsored by the Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Department.

League play will begin in August with games played Monday nights at Jim Thorpe Park. Entry fee is $250 per team on a first-come basis. Registration is at the parks department, 3901 El Segundo Blvd. Information: (213) 970-7230.

Registration is open for the Dick Fitzgerald two-mile run in the International Surf Festival.

The race, one of the major events of the weekend-long festival, is scheduled for 8 a.m. Aug. 3 on a wet sand/dry sand course on Torrance beach. There are men’s and women’s divisions.

Members of the former L.A. Heat soccer team will hold their fifth annual soccer academy with two summer sessions at Marine Avenue Park in Manhattan Beach.

The first session runs from July 15-19 and the second from Sept. 3-6. Information: John Britton at (213) 376-9354.

The San Pedro High girls’ softball team won the championship of the L.A. Summer Games last weekend behind the pitching of Petrina Martinez, who won all four tournament games including a doubleheader on the final day.

Hitting standouts for the Pirates were DeeDee Lopez, who hit a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to help defeat crosstown rival Mary Star, 3-2, in the semifinal, and Victoria Brucker, who hit a grand slam in the 7-5 championship game victory over Pasadena Poly.
