Trujillo 5th in 10K Race at Atlanta

La Jolla’s Maria Trujillo finished fifth in the women’s field of the 10-kilometer Peachtree Road Race, held Thursday in Atlanta.

Trujillo covered the course in 33 minutes, 39 seconds, close to a minute off the winning time by Denmark’s Dorthe Rasmusen (32:42). Katerina Khramenkova of the Soviet Union (32:45) was second, Eugene, Ore.’s Kristy Johnson (33:23) took third and Spokane’s Kim Jones (33:39) finished fourth.

The Peachtree is the 14th race on the 21-race Association of Road Racing Athletes circuit and the third largest. Only the Examiner Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco and the Lilac Bloomsday Run in Spokane, Wash., both 12-kilometer races held in May, have larger fields.

DIVING

Grossmont High graduate Juli Walls, the defending San Diego Section girls’ champion, opened the first of four days of competition at the Mission Viejo Invitational with a second-place showing.

Berkeley-bound Walls, representing Dive San Diego, finished behind Susie Durrough of Rose Bowl Aquatics, in the 16-18 age group class of 1-meter diving. She had 353.15 points Durrough’s 278.50. Walls will compete in the three-meter event today and in the Senior Open Saturday and Sunday.

FENCING

Welton Jones of San Diego was second in the Sabre competition at the U.S. Fencing Association National Championships in St. Charles, Ill. Jones finished behind Anthony Crupi of Wyckoff, N.J.

CYCLING

San Diego’s Alicia DeCampos, riding for the Los Angeles Sheriffs, finished 10th in the criterium finals at the U.S. Senior National Cycling Championships in Salt Lake City.
