*** Julian Cope, “Peggy Suicide,” Island. It’s impossible to tell whether such songs as “Double Vegetation” and “Leperskin” are the musical rantings of a madman or manifestations of genius from a true seer. Either way, they and much of the rest of “Peggy Suicide” are hypnotically compelling, resounding with a vibrancy hard to find in popular music. For good measure--and radio play--Cope (who appears at the Roxy on Monday and Tuesday) throws in “Beautiful Love,” a plaintive, trumpet-driven love song.
