T imes staff writer Itabari Njeri’s commentary on Spike Lee’s film “Jungle Fever” (“Doing the Wrong Thing,” June 23) has prompted an outpouring from readers, with responses supporting Lee outnumbering those supporting Njeri about 2 to 1. A sampling:

Whose Spokesman Is He?

I hope that you’ve received a mountain of correspondence thanking Njeri for so ably articulating the case against Lee’s newest exercise in self-enriching hate-mongering.

She spoke for me and other African Americans who are hip to this shrewdly exploitative, critic-appointed “spokesman” for black America. What it comes down to is: Lee has more in common with Madonna than with Malcolm X.
