Chance’s runaway in the 36th Transpac race to Hawaii slowed when she reported a day’s sail of only 152 nautical miles, while northeast trade winds of 8-12 knots finally reached the more southerly boats in the fleet.

Merlin’s 12-year-old record appeared safe. Chance would have to finish by midnight tonight and is projected to pass Diamond Head Tuesday.

Roy Disney’s new Santa Cruz 70 Pyewacket reported the best day with 223 miles. But Chance, owned and skippered by Bob McNulty, remained 70 miles ahead of the next boat, Marishiten, with 801 to go and was the handicap leader overall.
