Soldier Slain in Baldwin Park
The headline in the news “Gulf War Soldier on Leave Slain in Drive-By Shooting” (June 26) is shocking, revolting and humiliating. It demands our all-out effort to do something about the devastating cancer in our society that destroys innocent people for no reason except the insanity of those who must kill.
Imagine a 19-year-old Army private just home from combat in the Persian Gulf where he offered his life to defend what we, his fellow countrymen, believe in, only to be killed on the streets of our city in a gang-related, drive-by shooting in Baldwin Park!
Isn’t it time for our country to declare another kind of war--one that will again enable us to call ourselves “the land of the free and home of the brave”? We once sang “God Bless America.” Today we can only say “God help America.”
