COUNTYWIDE : No Traffic Fatalities on Holiday Weekend
No one was killed on Ventura County roads during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, but there were 11 collisions that resulted in injuries and 49 drunk-driving arrests, authorities said Monday.
“We had a maximum enforcement period of 102 hours,” California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Utter said of the weekend, which began on Thursday for many.
“A lot of people had Friday off.”
In all, 33 collisions were reported on the interstate highways and roads in the unincorporated areas, authorities said. Six of those accidents were alcohol-related.
Last year, seven accidents were reported during the holiday, only two of those involved injury.
The lower numbers reflect a shorter enforcement period because Independence Day fell on a Wednesday in 1990.
No fatalities were recorded last year either, Utter said.
The CHP increased the number of officers on duty over the weekend but did not use roadside stops to check for drunk drivers, Utter said.
