Hawaiian Gardens : ACLU Poses Legal Action to Get Recall Papers OKd

Share

The American Civil Liberties Union has sent a letter to Hawaiian Gardens City Clerk Carol J. Dorfmeyer telling her that it will initiate legal action if she finds any more technical reasons to delay certification of recall documents filed against Councilwoman Kathleen Navejas.

The ACLU became involved in city politics at the request of a group of citizens that has tried six times this year to get a recall effort going against Navejas. Twice, the group failed to meet deadlines in the recall process, and the other times the city clerk rejected their filing papers on technical grounds such as spelling and punctuation, said Joe Cabrera, one of those leading the recall.

ACLU attorney Carol Sobel said in her letter to the clerk that state law does not allow rejection of recall documents because of insubstantial mistakes in wording.
