COUNTYWIDE : Health Inspectors Close Restaurant

A Mexican restaurant on Saviers Road in Oxnard was the only food establishment closed by inspectors last month for health violations, county officials said Wednesday.

El Taco de Mexico was ordered closed June 4 for 39 health code violations, primarily involving food temperature controls, unsanitary conditions and poor food handling practices, said Betty Huff, environmental health specialist for the Ventura County environmental health division.

The restaurant was permitted to reopen the following day after correcting 31 of the violations and agreeing to remedy the others, which were minor, Huff said.

The division took similar action against three restaurants in North Bank Plaza on Johnson Drive in Ventura a month earlier. El Taco Cafe, A & W Restaurant and Tipps to Go were closed briefly May 2 because of a sewage backup from a communal floor drain.

The division also shut down Sushi Ichiban at 205 E. Channel Islands Blvd. in Port Hueneme on May 21 for three days because its owner failed to correct 21 health violations found in February. The problems have since been corrected, Huff said.
