Trustee Decides Not to Resign

Hermosa Beach elementary school Trustee Susan Meyer, whose letter of resignation was read by the board at a public meeting last month, said Wednesday she will not leave her post after all, but will serve the remainder of her four-year term.

Meyer, who “for personal reasons” was absent from all June board meetings, explained in an interview that her fellow board members had misunderstood her intentions and had drafted her letter of resignation without first clearing the matter with her.

“I did think about resigning,” she said. “But that month (of absences) allowed me to think things over.”

Key to her decision, she said, was the resignation this month of board President Joe Mark, who was chosen to fill a vacancy on the South Bay Union High School Board. The Hermosa Beach trustees decided on Wednesday not to replace Mark, but to hold his position vacant until regularly scheduled board elections in November.

Without Mark and Meyer, the five-member board would have been left nearly without a quorum, and “a three-member board sounded too small,” Meyer said.

Like Mark’s, Meyer’s term expires in November. She will not run for a second term. “My kids are gone from the school,” she said.

She did, however, agree on Wednesday to succeed Mark in the rotating president’s post.
