Formal Charges Filed in Sandwich Shop Killings

A part-time Cal State Northridge student was formally charged Thursday in San Fernando Municipal Court with two counts of murder in the execution-style shooting deaths of two men at a Northridge sandwich shop.

James Robinson Jr., 22, also was charged with robbery and with committing murder under special circumstances, an allegation that could lead to a prosecution request for the death penalty.

Robinson is charged with robbing the Subway sandwiches shop on Devonshire Boulevard on June 30.

Police said that before fleeing with about $600 from the shop’s cash register and safe, Robinson shot to death James White and Brian Berry, both 19, police said.

White was an employee of the shop, and Berry, his best friend, was visiting him. Both were shot in the head, police said.

Authorities said Robinson was fired from the shop in October because he was suspected of stealing about $200.

He is being held without bail and is to be arraigned Wednesday.
