TENNIS ROUNDUP : Martin Uses Strong Serving to Beat Top-Seeded Lundgren

Todd Martin had 20 aces to upset top-seeded Peter Lundgren of Sweden, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, Thursday in the second round of the $150,000 Hall of Fame Championships at Newport, R.I.

In the deciding set, Martin took a 2-0 lead, but Lundgren broke Martin’s serve and held his own serve to tie the set, 2-2. Martin got the decisive service break in the eighth game to go ahead, 5-3. He held serve to win the match.

In another match, fifth-seeded Christo van Rensburg defeated Johan Kriek, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia beat wild-card entry David Wheaton, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round of the Swiss Open at Gstaad.

Unseeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador defeated eighth-seeded Goran Prpic of Yugoslavia, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Top-seeded Sergi Bruguera also advanced.

Third-seeded Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union was extended by Mikael Pernfors of Sweden before winning, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in the second round of the Swedish Open at Bastad.

Belgian qualifier Sandra Wasserman upset seventh-seeded Carlie Cunningham, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, in a second-round match in a women’s tournament at Palermo, Sicily.

Qualifier Dave Randall surprised top-seeded Brad Pearce, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, and advanced to the semifinals of the Pilot Pen Open at New Haven, Conn.
