Two teen-agers were arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted murder and armed robbery after stabbing a 40-year-old man during a robbery, police said.

The wounded man, Edward Weigel of Huntington Beach, was listed in fair condition at Humana Hospital-Huntington Beach.

The robbery occurred about 1:30 p.m. on Van Buren Street as Weigel was apparently headed home with a duffel bag slung over his shoulder, Police Lt. Jack Reinholtz said.

Two youths--ages 15 and 17--tried to grab the bag, but Weigel wrestled them to the ground, Reinholtz said.

“One of the suspects then stabbed (Weigel) once close to the kidney,” he said, adding that the suspects fled with the bag.

But Weigel managed to chase the youths and found them rummaging through the bag, which contained clothes and a few personal items, he said.

On spotting Weigel, the suspects escaped by running through yards and jumping over fences in the residential neighborhood, he said.

Weigel then ran to his house and called police, Reinholtz said.

Officer Dan Ford arrived and spotted the teen-agers when they stopped a motorist on Newland Street and got into his car.

Ford stopped the vehicle and arrested the youths, who were later taken to Juvenile Hall in Orange.
