BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Reese, 86, Returns to Chart Pitches

Jimmie Reese, absent from Anaheim Stadium since early last season, is back in uniform, clipboard in hand.

The Angels’ 86-year-old conditioning coach hasn’t picked up a fungo bat yet, but is delighted to be able to help by charting pitches during games. Reese had heart problems last season and was able to work during spring training, only to be idled because of phlebitis and cataract surgery.

“It’s good to be back. It seems like I’ve been off for 40 years,” Reese said.

Manager Doug Rader dropped Wally Joyner from second to third in the batting order and put second baseman Luis Sojo in the second spot. Dave Winfield batted cleanup, Lance Parrish fifth and Dave Parker (one for 19) sixth. The only other time Parker has hit that low in the order was when he hit sixth April 30. Before Saturday’s game, Dave Gallagher was the only Angel hitting .300 or better at home this season. He was 14 for 45 (.311). . . . Mark Langston wasn’t upset about not getting a decision Friday, despite giving up one run in nine innings. “As a staff we need to pick up the offense now,” he said. “They’ve been there for us the whole year, especially for me. Maybe this is the time we need to pick them up.”
