WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Overcoming a 14-point first-half deficit, the South rallied to bury the West in women’s basketball, 71-57, at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.

The West, which led, 27-13, midway through the first half, shot just 25% after intermission.

West center Sara Wilson, a Hart High graduate who now plays at Oregon, made one of five field-goal attempts and finished with five points in a team-high 26 minutes.

Wilson added seven rebounds for the West, which had only one player score in double figures. Wilson did help hold South centers Heidi Gillingham (6-8) and Cinietra Henderson (6-4) to just seven combined points.

South forwards, however, combined to score 33 points to just 20 for the West.

“We had our work cut out today trying to contain the South’s inside game,” West Coach Jacqueline Hullah said. “I though we worked hard as a team, but their inside game was too much.”

In the second round, the West will face East today at noon. The East lost to the North, 70-62, Saturday.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

Priscilla Rouse of Canoga Park doubled and Kim Maher of Ventura homered to account for two of South’s five hits in a 2-1 loss to the East during a morning game at Hjelte Park in Encino.

The East scored both of its runs in its first at-bat off loser Dee Dee Weiman of Cerritos, who did not survive the inning. She was relieved by Tiffany Boyd of Orange.

Maher, an infielder and former Buena High star who now plays at Fresno State, homered in the bottom of the second.

In men’s free-pistol competition, U. S. Shooting Team veteran Jerry Wilder of Remington, Ind., edged two-time Olympian Don Nygord of La Crescenta at Prado Tiro Shooting Park in Chino.

Wilder finished with 637 points to 630 for Nygord.

Nygord was the 1981 world champion in the air pistol. Air-pistol competition begins today at 9:30 a.m., with the finals set for 1:30 p.m.
